TikTok Made Me Buy It!

I admit I’ve fallen victim to TikTok. I find myself scrolling endlessly for longer than I’d like. But a trend I find myself drawn to on TikTok are the beauty and Amazon/Target essential videos. People make these quick clips sharing their must have products or drugstore dupes.

The drugstore dupes have been my kryptonite. While I tend to be more of a high end makeup buyer, I know the drugstore has some pretty awesome dupes. I get discouraged with dupes because in the past I’ve had disappointing experiences. But none the less, I’ve been drawn in by these videos and have been taking notes.

Last month I made a trip to Target and bought a few items to try out first. I want to share my thoughts and if I think they’re good dupes. The first thing I was super interested to buy was this e.l.f concealer. Word on the street is that it’s a dupe for Tarte’s Shape Tape, which I love! However, I have this love/hate relationship with Tarte’s Shape Tape. A major con for me in regards to the product is when I put the applicator back into the tube, product almost always flies out. I’ve bought several bottles of shape tape and they’ve all done the same thing.

At $27, Tarte’s Shape Tape does a beautiful job at concealing my dark under eye area. But e.l.f’s $6 price point for their concealer seemed super appealing if it offered the same quality.

Tarte Shape Tape

Okay, so before I even begin talking about e.l.f’s concealer I feel like it’s only appropriate to discuss why Tarte’s Shape Tape has such a following. I’ve used Tarte’s concealer for awhile now and have gone through several bottles. Is it a holy grail product for me? Maybe. I do like it and enjoy it but there are a few cons. BUT the pros out weigh the cons.

What I like about this product is that it does a phenomenal job at covering blemishes and dark under eye bags. It’s pretty lightweight and blends very well. The best part is that you only need the SMALLEST amount, a little goes a long way with this product.

My cons for this product have nothing to do with the actual product itself but more with the packaging. Like I mentioned earlier, I’ve noticed that this product can get messy. The actual applicator sponge is quite large. So I’ve noticed that when I put the wand back into the tube, often I get a “splash” back. I know that sounds weird and a little gross. Also because of the applicator sponge is large, you have to be mindful of how much product you are applying. Again, a little goes a long way.

Now I don’t mind fragrance, that doesn’t bother me really, but do note that the Shape Tape does have a slight fragrance ( a bit lemony smelling?). So if you’re sensitive to smells you may not like this.

 

e.l.f Hydrating Camo Concealer

There are two different camo concealers by e.l.f, a regular formula and a hydrating  one. I went with the hydrating one which I did see quite a few people on TikTok post about. The hydrating one would be more similar to the Tarte one in my opinion as the Tarte concealer is pretty hydrating.

The packaging is pretty similar to Tartes, however I didn’t find it to be as messy as Tartes. No splash back! The applicator sponge is large like Tartes as well. And similarly, a little goes a long way.

Coverage with the e.l.f concealer is great! It is definitely comparable to Tarte. The biggest difference however is that the e.l.f concealer dries MUCH quicker so you need to blend as soon as you apply. The e.l.f concealer definitely isn’t as creamy and hydrating BUT it gets the job done just as well.

Final Verdict?

Is it a dupe? It’s pretty close but not a complete dupe. If you don’t have the $27 to shell out for Shape Tape, I do believe that e.l.f’s Hydrating Camo Concealer will do just fine. Remember, you’re going to need work fast with e.l.f’s concealer because it’s a bit more fast drying but I don’t think that’s a major issue. Would I buy the e.l.f concealer again? Yup! I think it’s a pretty good staple. If you’re on a budget this is a great product to have.
